The Overview: Patrick Bateman, a psychopathic nepo-business man, played by Christian Bale, fights to fit in as his need to kill and bloodlust rises. Directed by Mary Harron, this classic film has a mixture of mundane and trivial business matters and depraved slayings with a touch of comedy. Based on the book of the same name by Brett Easton Ellis, this slasher is a house-hold name and a must watch by both movie lovers and horror fans alike.
The Good: Fast-paced, great timing, and an all star cast. This film is a classic that still holds up and holds weight in the world of film. Bale quite literally kills it in this role as he portrays Bateman's spiral and further descent into madness. While making a mockery of Wall Street elitists, this masterpiece also has a very informative discourse of the music at the time.
The Bad: The ignorance of some of the characters - I'm looking at you "Christie" - can be infuriating and cause you to shout: "are you stupid?!" at the screen at times. Though it is a product of its time, I would have loved to see more of Bateman's killing spree. The elongated sex scenes can make it an uncomfortable slasher to watch for a wholesome family viewing. Even though it's an integral part of the film, the snoody business lingo and culture can exhaust a layperson.
The Bloody: When it rains blood, it pours blood. Despite the very vibrant bloody scenes, American Psycho has a tasteful amount of murder. Can be graphic at points but its easy to swallow and very entertaining. Not a jump scare fest so you don't have to grip the edge of your seat. More of a thriller than a slasher, so you get your fix of suspense without the gore that often accompanies a deranged serial killer.
